By far one of the biggest shot-losers for most golfers comes when they take their golf chipper out the bag and start swinging. Because the truth is that whilst most golf courses might focus on the state of your golf swing and particularly on driving. That it is your short game where most of your shots are won and lost. If you can master chipping strategies then you will already be ahead of most other golfers who spend all their time worrying about the small stuff, and who constantly get new golf clubs, but never bother to learn how to actually use them!

I quickly lowered my round score by using this Golf Chipper >>

Golf Chipper Tips

Now this is a real shame, because whilst golf is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon regardless of your score. All of us find that the swift drink (or 3) after the round at the 19th hole tastes a good deal better if you have managed to knock a few shots of your normal golf game, and if you are a high handicap player (say 24 or higher), then you can make dramatic and speedy improvements in your score IF you focus on the right things.

For most golfers the right things to focus on are their short game, and one key component of that is chipping. Your golf chipper gets an awful lot of use in the average round of golf if you add it all up, and it also acts as a pivotal phase shift between the driving game and the putting game. As such it is important to brush up on how to improve your chipping technique, as it is literally like the lynchpin in golf that draws the other strands of the game together. It also happens to be the one area of the game that people don’t practice as much as they should.

Think about it. Even if you regularly practice away from your normal weeks rounds of golf, and go to the driving range, then were you mainly hitting drivers? Be honest. If you ask most golfers this question, and they are being honest, then you will find that chipping is much less commonly practiced. In some ways this makes sense, because smacking a golf ball to high heaven is a great deal of fun! And that’s fabulous. But you do need to set aside some time for your golf chipper if you are going to make good strides in the chipping game, because practice certainly does make perfect.

What is more, it is actually much easier then you think to knock up to ten shots off your golf score.

Start off by getting a golf chipper you feel comfortable with and then start practicing hard.

Golf Chipper Insights…

Very often it is quite easy to hone in on the primary causes behind chipping errors. Often these will come down to the angle of striking, and how your wrist position and its movement during flight affect the phases of the swing. Quite simply this means that if you can learn to control the angle at which you strike the ball, and keep the amount of movement in your wrist and arm down to the bear minimum, then you will immediately start making progress.

This is why I often think that the Meditative Monks that you see in the movies would make good golfers, because calmness when striking the ball is so key to how much success you have. Luckily though, you don’t have to be a monk to learn how to get your chipping game sorted out. You simply have to practice more with your golf chipper and get a lot more practice.

If you are looking to lower your golf score than optimising your short game is a must. And learning how to properly master you golf chipper can play a large part in saving you shots and lowering your golf score substantially. To realise this you only have to think about how many shots you add to your average round by messing up chip shots, shots from the bunker and pitches.

It is likely to be quite a few, and whilst it is tempting to focus on improving your long game, because let’s face it, there is nothing more fun than smashing the hell out of a golf ball with a driver! The truth is that in terms of actually lowering your score, mastering how your golf chipper works is a much better use of your time.

You can easily knock several shots off your average round just by getting a golf chipper that really suits your game.

Here is the golf chipper I use >> (It shaved several shots off my round and is surprisingly cheap).

Golf Chipper Tips

Whilst it is a great to go out and buy a new golf chipper, pitch or wedge it is also essential that you get some proper instruction in how to use it. Otherwise, with the wonderful advances in golf club technology, it’s a bit like buying a Porsche, before having learned to drive! You are not going to be able to get the best out of it. And it’s not going to do you a whole lot of good unless you take the time to learn how to use it to its full potential.

The good news is that there are a lot of things that you can do very quickly to get control over your chipping, because often-times the problem lies not with the particular golf chipper that you have right now, but rather with the technique you are using. One very common problem with golfers when they try to hit a chip shot is that they will not hit cleanly through the ball, but will instead scoop it. The most common reason for this is that they are over-thinking the swing, and instead of following straight through are pausing momentarily during the strike. And this little lapse is enough to see the ball scoop up, rather than land crisply on the green.

Essentially what is happening psychologically when this happens is that your brain doesn’t quite believe your body that it knows what it is doing with the shot. So, at the last minute it is causing you to have overcompensation in your shoulder. This then ends up carrying on down through your arm, and ends up with you sculling the shot or worse.

Now, whilst all this starts in your head and carries on down through your shoulder and into your arm and hand. The truth is that it is the final flick of the wrist at the end of the stroke that ultimately is what causes the final problem. So if you can eliminate that, then you can immediately take strides along the path of improving.

One great way to go about doing this is to place some very stiff plastic (a credit card is ideal), or stiff card underneath your watch. This is then a physical aid to keeping your wrist tauter, and has the effect of reducing the wrist flick during your effort with your golf chipper.

It can be a good idea though to try out a new golf chipper, as feeling comfortable with your club is an important part of both enjoying the game of golf, and shooting your lowest possible score!

Here are a selection of recommended golf chippers that you can try (click on any of the images to check them out).

Golf Chipper… Final Thoughts

Now, this should be thought of as more a training aid, rather than something you would consistently do in competition golf! (Your golfing buddies might look at you a little funnily if you start wandering around with a credit card under your wrist on a permanent basis ). Remember, what you are trying to do is to give your body a muscle memory of what it means to hit a good chip shot, and so in the same way that once you have learned to ride a bike when you are a youngster, you can quite quickly take off the training wheels. By the same token once you start producing more consistently good chip shots using a strong wrist, and a nice tempo with your golf chipper, then you can move onto more advanced techniques.
